After a long wait the 2020 AFF Suzuki Cup finally got underway with a bang as four matches across the two groups saw plenty of creativity, chances, saves and goals.

No fewer than 11 goals were scored over those matches with several star performers at both ends of the pitch. We begin with those who shone in the Matchday One ties that included:

Narubadin Weerawatnodom (Thailand)

The Thai wing-back was a star performer in the War Elephants' win over Timor-Leste, providing the assist for both of the goals and also having a first half shot strike the underside of the crossbar.

Ikhsan Fandi (Singapore)

Tall and powerful, the 22-year-old striker proved an absolute handful for Myanmar in their opening match, grabbing the second and third goals in the dominant 3-0 win and constantly causing trouble both in the air and on the ground.

Akhyar Rashid (Malaysia)

The left winger was an absolute dynamo for Malaysia in their 3-1 win over Cambodia, winning the penalty that set Harimau Malaya on their way, scoring the second with a fine solo effort and racking up plenty of other good chances.

Keo-Oudone Souvannasangso (Laos)

Underdogs Laos did fantastically well despite a 2-0 loss to the defending champions Vietnam and undoubtedly their star performer was 21-year-old goalkeeper Souvannasangso, who made a string of key saves, including a 75th minute penalty stop to deny from Vu Van Thanh.
