Hanoi: Having swept aside Cambodia 3-0 to maintain their undefeated record at the 2018 AFF Suzuki Cup Vietnam have already turned their attention to next week’s semifinals.

It took a while for the hosts to get going in front of a full house at Hanoi’s Hang Day Stadium but two goals in quick succession late in the first half from Nguyen Tien Linh and Nguyen Quang Hai put Vietnam in a strong position at the break.

A third from Phan Van Duc shortly after the hour completed the win that saw Vietnam collect three wins and a draw from their four matches.

With eight goals in the plus column and not a single one conceded it was close to a perfect start to the tournament but as midfielder Nguyen Van Quyet noted the job is only half finished.

“I think the whole team really did our best and we know that the mission is not yet complete.

“We have to keep believing and having trust in our coaches and supporters but of course we’re extremely happy about this result.

“The important thing now though is the next match and we must start concentrating on the semifinal.”

That two-legged affair will see the Golden Stars matches with one of either Thailand, Philippines or Singapore with the team being drawn to play the second of those matches back at home.

“We can say that the first part of the job is finished with this result but now we have another two matches to prepare for.

“Regardless of who we play we are preparing to win but we know it won’t be an easy task especially with our next match being away from home.”
