Match Overview

Thailand’s quest for a record fifth AFF Suzuki Cup title came full circle when they secured a 2-0 victory in the second leg of the final against Indonesia to seal the tie 3-2 on aggregate.

The Rajamangala Stadium crowd were made to wait as the hosts failed to break down a stubborn Garudas defence at first but a brace from youngster Siroch Chatthong sealed the game to hand the War Elephants a perfect end to the year.

The victory also meant Thailand became outright record-holders with five titles with Singapore left behind on four. The kings of Southeast Asia have justified their tags as tournament favourites.

Goals

37’ (1-0) – Heartbreak for the visitors as Fachruddin Aryanto clears the ball straight into an incoming Siroch who sees the ball rebound into the net. The Thais are on the way.

47’ (2-0) – Siroch does it again with his second goal on the night. Chanathip Songkrasin’s intelligent pass found the big man who curled his shot past a hapless Kurnia in goal.

Match Highlights


Zico comes out firing at Rajamangala –

Win and a record fifth title could be on the cards. Coach Kiatisuk Senamuang reverts to a back-three and sends in the talismanic Charyl Chappuis and Siroch to add firepower in attack. This is going to be an exciting matchup.

Disallowed goal for offside –

Prathum Chutong puts the ball in the net from a Sarach Yooyen cross but the latter is offside. Indonesia have yet to get out of their half for the opening three minutes.

First caution of the game –

Thailand have been conceding fouls by the Indonesians from the get go. The referee finally blows his whistle in the 17th minute and flashes the first yellow to Benny Wahyudi for taking down Siroch.

In for the injured Andik Vermansyah, Zulham Zamrun has Indonesia’s first chance at the other end but his fierce drive fails to find the target on 26 minutes.

Fachruddin loses ball, Tristan blasts wide –

Under pressure from Siroch in the 29th minute, Fachruddin clears the ball straight out to an alert Tristan Do who takes one touch and smashes the ball high and wide. Thailand are not making inroads despite their possession.

Man-mountain Siroch versus Indonesia –

The Indonesians have defended well but they are not having much luck marking Siroch. The giant forward is giving as good as he gets. A certain Thai legend Worawoot Srimaka comes to mind.

Teerasil forces Kurnia Meiga into fine save –

With Siroch stealing the limelight, his strike partner Teerasil Dangda tries to get in on the action but his fierce shot is palmed away spectacularly by the Indonesian stopper with 50 minutes on the clock.

Indonesia throw Lilipaly into attack –

They need a goal to level the aggregate score and Alfred Riedl makes his move by bringing on Dedi Kusnandar and pushing Stefano Lilipaly to join Boas Salossa in attack with a third of the game left to play.

Messi Jay illuminates Rajamangala –

The boy they coined as Southeast Asia’s version of Lionel Messi decides to pull out the party tricks in the 70th minute. Stealing the ball in his own half, he turns and releases Teerasil through on goal, only for his Muangthong United teammate to let him down with a poor first touch.

Kurnia Meiga keeps Indonesia in the game –

After Siroch is brought down for a penalty, Teerasil steps up to the spot but see his weak effort that saved to keep his Indonesia in the hunt with 11 minutes to go.

Sour end to the game for Lestaluhu –

Abduh Lestaluhu is shown a straight red card after he kicks the ball out of frustration at the Thai bench. Disappointing end for the Garudas who have had a marvelous tournament.
