For the runners-up of the 2018 edition, there had been high expectations on the Malaysia side prior to kicking off their AFF Suzuki Cup 2020 campaign, however their hopes of finishing one better than 2018 ended in disappointment.

Malaysia had a decent start to the tournament, dispatching Cambodia and Laos comfortably to secure two straight wins. However, they came up short against rivals Indonesia and Vietnam, and thus missed out on semi-final spots after finishing third in Group B.
