The 2020 AFF Suzuki Cup has seen a flurry of goals, with no fewer than 84 across the 25 matches at a rate of almost three and a half goals per game.

Many of those came from the seven nominations we have here for the leading marksman at the tournament as some young talents emerged and others cemented their place in the pantheon of the all-time greats.

Teerasil Dangda (Thailand)

One of the standout performers of the group stage, where he scored four goals in just three matches, Teerasil is now also the all-time leading scorer in the history of the AFF Suzuki Cup.

He may not have found the back of the net in the knockout stage just yet but has been just as important with his link up play and work in the air that’s allowed others to play off him.  

Ikhsan Fandi (Singapore)

After having scored twice in Singapore’s opening encounter the young forward didn’t then score again until the first leg of the semi-final against Indonesia but that was a crucial strike as it allowed the Lions to level the tie.

Unfortunately things then fell apart in a wild second leg but the 22-year-old remained a constant threat in front of goal, particularly from aerial situations.

Irfan Jaya (Indonesia)

Tactically flexible, the 25-year-old has lined up on both the right and the left as well as in wide, central and more advanced roles where he’s a dynamic threat with his pace and trickery on the ball.

More than just the creativity, it’s also been the production that has stood out with the playmaker already having three goals and two assists at the tournament along with five key passes.

Nguyen Quang Hai (Vietnam)

In a Vietnam side that struggled at times for creativity it often appeared as though their star playmaker was a one-man show.

A constant danger with the ball at his feet with his vision and trickery the raw numbers also stand out with the 24-year-old having two goals, two assists and an eye-catching 13 key passes.

Safawi Rasid (Malaysia)

The 24-year-old started the tournament on fire, grabbing his nation’s first goal in a win over Cambodia and then bagging a hattrick three days later against Laos.

His fortunes though went the way of Malaysia’s more generally as he failed to score again  and picked up an injury as his nation was bundled out in the group stage although he still, surprisingly, remains joint top of the scoring charts.

Chanathip Songkrasin (Thailand)

Even with a late start to the tournament, Chanathip has sparkled and stood up when it really mattered in the knockout stages.

Fast becoming one of the all-time greats of Southeast Asian football, even at just 28 years of age, it was the diminutive playmaker’s brace that saw off Vietnam in the semi-finals.

He then backed that up with another two goal effort in the first leg of the final as the War Elephants have one hand on a record sixth AFF Suzuki Cup title.

Witan Sulaeman (Indonesia)

One of the standout performers at the tournament, the 20-year-old is yet another from this young Garuda side to have made a name for himself across the region.

Having featured in all seven of Indonesia’s matches on their way to the final, the versatile right winger/attacking midfielder has scored twice, provided three assists, played nine key passes and been a general threat with his vision and movement.
