If new Laos coach, V.Sundramoorthy, wants to gain some inside knowledge on the nation’s opening AFF Suzuki Cup opponents he needs to look no further than his captain.

The vastly experienced Thothilath Sibounhuang spent three months training in Vietnam back in 2012 and knows exactly what to expect from one of the tournament favourites when the Golden Stars roll into Vientiane tomorrow.

“I had three months training in Vietnam and I know from that experience that the Vietnamese players are very technically gifted and also a disciplined team.”

Rather than being daunted by having to face the 2016 semifinalists in their opening match the 28-year-old, who will compete at his third AFF Suzuki Cup, said he’s relishing the chance to take on the might of Vietnam.

“It’s the same feeling every time I play for Laos and I’m extremely excited and proud to represent my country and am really looking forward to the tournament.

“I’m also a very big fan of the Vietnamese national team and am equally excited to compete against them.”

Sibounhuang though doesn’t have the fondest of memories playing against his country’s eastern neighbour with Vietnam winning their previous AFF Suzuki Cup encounter 3-0 in Hanoi back in 2014, but at least tomorrow he won’t have to face the man who did the damage on that day.

“There is a rivalry between Laos and Vietnam but it’s one of mutual respect and admiration and I remember having played previously against a player who I respect very much and that was Le Cong Vinh and he was certainly the player who did the most damage that day!”

Whilst the now retired star forward won’t be on the pitch for Vietnam, the visitors will likely have a strong backing in Vientiane with tens of thousands of Vietnamese living in Laos but Sibounhuang is confident that the home support will help spur his nation on as they host AFF Suzuki Cup action for the very first time.

“I’m very happy to be participating in the Suzuki Cup this year.

“I spoke to my friends and family and they’re all extremely excited about the tournament and we look forward to having a lot of fans inside the stadium tomorrow.”
