The fans have voted and the 16 original nominations have been whittled down to the final two options in our bid to discover just which goal is the greatest in the history of the AFF Championship.

The two remaining contenders are Vietnamese legend Le Cong Vinh’s winner in the 2008 final and Indonesian starlet Pratama Arhan for his goal in the group stage of the 2020 edition.

Let’s take a look at just what the goals meant for their respective nations and don’t forget to vote to determine just which is the Greatest Goal in the History of the AFF Championship. 

LE CONG VINH (2008)

Already a household name in Southeast Asian football circles, the tireless Le Cong Vinh became an instant legend in his homeland with this precise header in the 94th minute of the second leg of the 2008 final.

Cong Vinh had netted his first goal of the 2008 campaign in the first leg of the final at Rajamangala Stadium to put his side 2-0 up in a game they eventually won 2-1 to take a slender lead back to the Vietnamese capital.

With the hosts 1-0 down after Teerasil Dangda's first-half goal in the return meeting, Cong Vinh's stoppage-time equaliser effectively handed the Golden Star Warriors their first AFF Championship title, sparking wild scenes in and around My Dinh Stadium in Hanoi and indeed right across the nation.

For Cong Vinh, it meant that he had scored in both legs of the final to etch his name in footballing folklore, while, for his country, it was seventh time lucky in the AFF Championship as the Vietnamese were finally crowned champions.

PRATAMA ARHAN (2020)

Not many full-backs score in international football so for teenage left-back Pratama Arhan, in his first major international tournament, to get two goals at the 2020 AFF Championship it was an event to remember.

The second of those goals – an 87th-minute equaliser in the second leg of the semi-final against Singapore – was a vitally important one as it sent that match to extra-time where Indonesia would eventually score twice to reach the final.

The first, however, will live long in the memory as it combined power, placement and pure technique to fly into the far corner in a group stage clash against Malaysia and you’ll travel far and wide to see a better strike from a teenage full-back in a major tournament.

After the Malaysians had taken an early lead, Pratama's wonder strike put the Garuda 3-1 up and effectively killed a game that Malaysia needed to win to advance. Indonesia eventually won 4-1 and with it eliminated their biggest rivals.
