Vientiane: Two second half goals saw Myanmar come from behind for the second match in a row to record a 3-1 win over Laos on Friday.

After their 4-1 demolition of Cambodia in their opening fixture earlier in the week, Myanmar travelled to the Lao capital feeling confident of another three points.

But they were on the back foot early when the home side took the lead after just 14 minutes thanks to a brilliant strike from the edge of the area from 26-year-old midfielder Phouthone Innalay.

That goal gave V.Sundramoorthy’s side confidence and they continued to test the Myanmar defence, but pleasingly for their coach Antoine Hey they held firm and on the stroke of half time they found a way back into the contest thanks to a fine strike from star striker Aung Thu.

The home side had a glorious opportunity to re-take the lead early in the second half when a quick break saw the ball find its way to Somxay Keohanam who had time and space to take a shot, but he pulled his effort wide of the mark.

It was then Myanmar’s chance to go close as Aung Thu saw his shot cleared off the line by a desperate Vanna Bounlovongsa.

The home side really should’ve re-taken the lead on 66 minutes when the exciting Soukaphone Vongchiengkam played in Phithack Kongmathilath, but with just the goalkeeper to beat he inexplicably pulled his shot and saw it glance off the post and out for a goal kick.

The home side was made to pay for that miss just five minutes later when their defence failed to clear the ball and a beautiful first-time effort from Wai Htet Phyo found its way past Outthilath Nammakhot.

Myanmar secured the win in the 84th minute when they broke quickly, with Win Thein Than's cross narrowly missing the outstretched boot of Aung Thu at the near post but finding an unmarked Maung Maung Lwin at the back post who tapped home a simple goal into an open net.

The win sees Myanmar jump to the top of Group A, ahead of Vietnam on goals scored. The Golden Stars will be Myanmar's next opponent on Tuesday in a match that could decide which team tops the group.

Laos travel to Cambodia for their final group stage match knowing they have already been eliminated from the tournament.
