Japan star Keisuke Honda has been appointed as the new general manager of the Cambodia national team on Sunday.

Football Federation of Cambodia President General Sao Sokha, in announcing Honda's signing of a two-year contract at a press conference, said the Melbourne Victory player will help chart the national team's fortunes in the 2018 AFF Suzuki Cup.

Honda's appointment comes just days after he signed with reigning A-League champions Melbourne Victory for the 2018-19 season.

Media reports stated that Honda will continue his playing career in the A-League but will assist Cambodia’s coaching staff through weekly video calls.

Honda, who announced his retirement from international football after the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia, shot to fame at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa when his goals helped Japan reach the Round of 16.

He netted 37 times in 98 appearances for his country and was the first Japanese player to score at three World Cups (2010, 2014, 2018).

In the 2018 AFF Suzuki Cup, Cambodia are in Group A with Vietnam, Malaysia and Myanmar.
