Kuala Lumpur: Heavyweights Indonesia’s search for a first regional title will continue as they take on Brunei Darussalam in a Group A fixture of the AFF Mitsubishi Electric Cup 2022 at the Kuala Lumpur Football Stadium in Cheras on Monday.

Shin Tae-yong’s Indonesia kicked off their campaign at the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium on Friday with a 2-1 win over Cambodia, thanks to goals from Egy Maulana and Witan Sulaeman.

But despite a strong start and the loud support of more than 25,000 fans in Jakarta, the hosts had to fight hard for the win over the Angkor Warriors.

Meanwhile, Brunei DS, on their return to the AFF Championship after a 26-year hiatus, have lost both of their outings in Group A so far. Mario Rivera’s side opened with a 5-0 defeat at the hands of defending champions Thailand before the Philippines shipped five more past them in a 5-1 loss.

The game against the Azkals was, nonetheless, historic for Brunei DS as Razimie Ramlli scored the country’s second goal in the AFF Championship history and their first in more than 26 years.

Monday will be the first meeting between the two sides in the AFF Championship, however, it was Indonesia who emerged 5-0 winners when they last met in an international friendly back in 2012.

Both Witan and Egy were at the centre of the incessant Indonesian attacks against Ryu Hirose’s Cambodia and if it wasn’t for the profligacy in front of the goal, Shin’s side could have won by far more than the one-goal margin.

However, the Garuda are likely to be without the impressive Witan against Brunei DS after the young attacker, who plies his trade in the Slovak Super Liga with AS Trencin, had to be substituted in the later stages of the Cambodia encounter due to a suspected hamstring injury.

After what was a scrappy home win in their opener, Indonesia, who have finished runners-up on a record six occasions in the tournament, will hope to record a statement win over Brunei DS on the road as they go in hunt for the AFF Mitsubishi Electric Cup 2022 title.
