After a furious first round in our challenge to find the greatest goal in the history of the AFF Championship there are eight strikes that remain.

Two Malaysian players feature in today’s first quarter-final but they’ll face tough competition from a Vietnamese legend and a Thai superstar, while three of our four featured goals helped their nations lift the AFF Championship trophy.

Enjoy a look back at some of the most iconic goals ever witnessed at the tournament and be sure to cast your vote to help decide which two goals will advance to the semi-finals.

CHANATHIP SONGKRASIN (2014) vs SAFEE SALI (2010)

A stunning goal in a massive match as Chanathip’s left-footed rocket helped seal the 2014 AFF Championship title for Thailand and end a 12-year trophy drought for his nation as he picked up his first of three MVP awards.

Another crucial goal in a final was this effort from Safee Sali in the second leg of the 2010 showpiece as he raced onto a well-weighted through ball and thumped his shot past the keeper at the near post to help ensure Malaysia lifted their first AFF Championship trophy.

LE CONG VINH (2008) vs SYAHMI SAFARI (2018)

A superb piece of skill from Vietnam’s talisman in the 94th minute of the 2008 final sparked wild scenes at the My Dinh Stadium in Hanoi as Le Cong Vinh’s glancing header gave Vietnam their first title at the AFF Championships.

This swerving, dipping, effort into the far post from Syahmi Safari back in the semi-finals of the 2018 edition helped Malaysia advance to the final where they were eventually defeated by Vietnam but even with that loss, this wonder strike will live long in the memories of fans of Southeast Asian football.
