The 2020 AFF Suzuki Cup once again saw a host of midfielders turn in star performances and our list of nominees reflect the versatile nature of those who shone in Singapore.

We’ve covered all bases, from the deeper options who break up play, to the controlling central midfielders, the wider players and the creative outlets further forward.

Alfeandra Dewangga (Indonesia)

A key cog of an Indonesian side that grew match-by-match throughout the tournament, the 20-year-old is another participating at his first major international tournament who has shown maturity beyond his years.

Displaying true versatility by playing both in central midfield and central defence, the youngster leads the entire competition in both clearances and interceptions and he’s also produced four key passes and provided an assist for a youthful Garuda side.

Kevin Ingreso (Philippines)

A standout for the Philippines in central midfield, the 28-year-old was a key link between defence and attack where he played more key passes than any other Azkal and also contributed two assists and a goal.

Ricky Kambuaya (Indonesia)

The 25-year-old isn’t a flashy player but he’s been the cog that’s held together an Indonesian side that has shown some defensive frailties at times.

Able to operate as a deeper, central or more advanced midfielder, Kambuaya has been solid on the ball and a real anchor in his screening work as well as notching an assist and seven key passes.

Nguyen Hoang Duc (Vietnam)

The only midfielder to have started every match for Vietnam, the 23-year-old quickly developed into a key starter for the Golden Star Warriors in what was his first major tournament at senior level.

In a Vietnam side that constantly recycle the ball through midfield, he completed more passes than any other player in the team, was strong defensively from his central role as well as providing two assists, scoring a goal and playing seven key passes.   

Supachok Sarachat (Thailand)

The versatile playmaker has lived up to his pre-tournament billing as a key creative threat for a Thailand side that are on the verge of winning a record sixth AFF Suzuki Cup title.

Having lined up everywhere from the left wing to an attacking midfield role and as a shadow striker, the 23-year-old has caught the eye regardless of position.

With three goals, two assists and seven key passes he’s been one of the creative hubs for this attack-minded side with his vision and passing also shining through.

Phitiwat Sukjitthammakul (Thailand)

A regular and controlling presence as Thailand charged into the final, the 26-year-old was tasked with much of the defensive work in midfield from his deeper position whilst also keeping the ball recycling through the central and more advanced areas of the pitch.

With six interceptions and three clearances as well as an 85% passing accuracy he’s flourished in both his defensive duties and work on the ball as the anchor that allows others to sparkle further forward.

Shahdan Sulaiman (Singapore)

The vastly experienced central midfielder was the heartbeat of a Singapore side that reached the semi-finals for the first time in nine years.

Even with his nation having failed to reach the final, he’s still created more chances than any other player at the tournament (19) in addition to having a whopping 17 key passes, two assists and a goal as well as an 80% passing accuracy rate in a stellar all-round showing.
