Yangon: After a hard-fought draw in Yangon, Vietnam have moved to the cusp of qualification for the semifinals of the AFF Suzuki Cup but know there’s still plenty of work to do if they want to win a second regional title.

In front of a 30,000 capacity crowd at the Thuwunna Stadium the visitors came close to grabbing a late goal only for it to be ruled offside as the clash ended scoreless – a result that keeps both Myanmar and Vietnam a point clear of Malaysia with one round of matches remaining.

The Golden Stars midfielder Nguyen Quang Hai said after the match that whilst the team was pleased with the one point they’re far from the finished article.

“Today we tried our best but we still need to improve in some areas.”

One of those areas is probably not in defence where the team has been imperious to date in not having conceded a single goal across their three matches although the clash in Yangon was the first time that their vaunted attack has also failed to grab a goal.

That leaves the team needing only a point at home to Cambodia on Saturday to secure a top-two finish and for 21-year-old Quang Hai that’s the only thing on his mind.

“We must continue to do our best to ensure we get the result we need in the next match.”

The clash with Cambodia will take place at the same time as Malaysia entertains Myanmar in another fixture that will determine which two nations progress through to the knockout stage.
